The route to Poon Hill
So how to get to Poon Hill? Well, the route to Poon Hill is quite straight forward. It all begins in Kathmandu, where you’ll be arriving at the start of your holiday. After a cultural sightseeing experience, you’ll be heading towards Pokhara. This amazing city, known as the gateway into the southern Annapurna Himalayas is overlooked by the legendary fishtail mountain Machhapuchhare (6,999m/22,963ft), and touches the banks of Phewa Lake. From Pokhara, it’s just a short drive to Nayapul, the starting point of Himalayan Friends’ Poon Hill trek.
After unloading at Nayapul, we’ll prepare to start the trek and head on to the trail towards Tikhedunga (1,540m/5,053ft). It won’t take long before reaching this traditional village. The next day is probably the most strenuous during the whole trek to Poon Hill. We prepare to head up to Ghorepani (2,750m/ 9,020ft). While the trail is easy to follow the strenuous part is that it’s a constant climb on stone steps. Passing the village of Ulleri and having climbed for a good 4 to 5 hours you’ll reach Ghorepani, the village just below Poon Hill. You’ll want to get an early sleep, as the next day we hike up to Poon Hill in the early morning while it’s still dark outside. Our target? Reaching Poon Hill in time to catch an epic sunrise over the Annapurna Massif! A hot beverage stand is at the hill to warm up and see panoramic views of Mt Dhaulagiri (8,167m/26,795ft), Mt Annapurna I (8,000m/26,247ft), Mt. Hiumchuli (6,441m/21,132ft), and Mt. Machhapuchhare (6,999m/22,963ft)!
After having enjoyed those epic views the Poon Hill trek continues towards Tadapani (2,700m/8,860ft). This small and quaint village has also some incredible valley views. The next day we head for Ghandruk village (1,980m/6,496ft). Known as the biggest Gurung village of the region, the locals made a museum showcasing the unique culture of the Gurung people from Nepal. Definitely worth a visit! The next few days we head for Pothana and the last Dhampus Phedi from where we drive back to Pokhara. Tomorrow we’ll take a short flight back to Kathmandu, as the next day we conclude this amazing short trek, the Poon Hill trek.

Top-notch service with a smile made for magical family trekking vacation

With their top-notch service and expertise, the friendly guys at Himalayan Friends Trekking made our family vacation worry-free and hence, magical. Despite two younger children (ages 10 and 8), we managed to complete the four-day Poon Hill trek with minimal complaining by the kids (and me, too). Their guide and porters went the extra mile to make sure every detail was in place, even carrying kid(s) up the trail when needed. This allowed us to not worry about a thing and enjoy hiking the majestic Annapurna range to the fullest. Cannot recommend highly enough. Thank you and look forward to the next family trek with Himalayan Friends.

Like time spent with friends & family!

I had three open weekends in Nepal during a work trip, and Phuri and his fantastic team kept me busy with a mix of exactly what I was looking to do with every free minute of my time. From a 3-day trek out of Pokhara with the amazing Dendi to a mix of day treks and tours (with knowledgeable guides and safe & efficient drivers) around the Kathmandu Valley, I ventured as far and experienced as much as I could. I was traveling solo, but it all felt like time spent with friends and family! I can't wait for the next trip.

First class organisation and companionship.

First class treatment, organisation, and service throughout from Phuri and his team. Everybody involved was friendly and helpful, and nothing was too much. Did the Poon Hill trail (4 day) out of Pokhara with children (8 & 11 years) and despite my initial concerns about motivating the kids (the younger in particular has a history of sit-down protests in the hills!) I needn't have worried. Phuri was excellent with the children and knew exactly when to step in when things started to challenge them and they needed motivation. Not only did they complete the trail without hardly a grumble, they absolutely enjoyed it as well. Incredible family experience for all of us, and many memories made. I couldn't recommend this route enough if you want to introduce kids to the beauty of the mountains and the lessons of challenge and reward. And Phuri and his team are definitely the mentors to have by your side. Just being able to turn up with everything else organised and taken care of was such a pleasure, and made it possible to just enjoy the experience. Thank you so much Himalayan Friends!
