Go on an amazing journey with Himalayan Friends and trek deep within the Sagarmatha and Makalu Barun National Parks, through steep and technical trails, until reaching the top of Mera Peak! During the Mera Peak Climbing you’ll also get a unique Himalayan camping experience as well as staying at the guesthouses. Known as a technical beginner’s peak, Mera Peak climbing is also often used as a practice run before attempting to summit Mt Everest.
How to reach the Summit of Mera Peak
It all starts with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, the world’s 38th highest airport. This will allow us to enter the Sagarmatha National Park known as the home of Mt Everest. From Lukla we head into a different direction than the more traditional Everest Base Camp route and head on to Chutanga and Chatara La. The trek goes upwards and can be strenuous for the inexperienced so we at Himalayan Friends do recommend you to build up your fitness and stamina before undergoing this trek and climb.
Crossing the Chatara La Pass, will give you some of the first incredible mountain views. These include views of the Kongdi Ri, Numbur Himal, and Karyolang Peak. After the pass a short descend through beautiful juniper and pine forests takes us to Kothe. During this part of the Mera Peak Climbing you’ll have chances to encounter with some of the Himalayan wildlife, such as the sloth bear, and the elusive jungle cat! The next day we head on to Thagnak. Near the village there is an ancient Buddhist Gompa hidden between massive boulders. Definitely worth a visit! Another day of trekking takes us to Khare. Here will set up our first camp, and prepare for our climb. We’ll spend the rest of the afternoon as well as the next day checking our gear, practicing climbing and exploring around Khare while enjoying the views and great mountain air. We are now at an altitude of above 5,000m/16,404ft! Going ahead slowly but steadily we make our way to Mere High Camp. Here we set up our second camp and wait in anticipation of summiting the next day! We’ll have to wake up early and check the weather conditions before attempting to climb Mera Peak. Once all is set and secure we leave camp behind and make our way to the summit of Mera Peak at 6,476m/21,247ft! The climb is less technical than other peaks and can be done by novice mountaineers. By traversing glacial crevices, steep cliffs and walls via rope we make our way to the top of Mera Peak. At the summit you’ll immediately feel relieved and take in the view! Yes, you are above the clouds and can see the true beauty of the Himalayas! The most prominent mountains you can view from atop Mera Peak are the; Mt Everest 8,848m/29,029ft, Mt Kanchenjunga 8,586m/28,169ft, Mt Lhotse 8,516m/27,940ft, Mt Makalu 8,485m/27,838ft, Mt Cho Oyu 8,188m/26,864ft, Mt Lhotse Shar 8,382m/27,500ft, Mt Gyachung Kang 7,952m/26,089ft, Mt Nuptse 7,861m/25,791ft, Mt Kanchungste 7,678m/25,190ft, and Mt Chamlang 7,321m/24,019ft. Some mountains maybe not visible depending on the weather. That’s why Himalayan Friends does strongly recommend to book your Mera Peak Climbing either in the spring season or the fall/autumn season. This way you are guaranteed to get the best views and weather!
Having enjoyed the views from Mera Peak, we descend all the way back to Khare and Kothe. To reach back at Lukla we take a different route and visit Thuli Kharka. From here we can see more incredible views and witness various Sherpa communities tending there meadows and yak pastures. The trek heads further and overlaps back with the Everest Base Camp trekking trail at Phakding. A short ascend from here, and we are back at Lukla. We’ll fly back to Kathmandu the next morning to conclude the Mera Peak climbing package.

Special note: we do advice to book a few additional days on your holiday to anticipate flight delays to and from Lukla.
